What is this?
I realize this is hard to distinguish, but it’s the lasting image left by a bear visitor we had last month. There had been no rain for weeks and everything was covered with pollen, including the barbeque grill. This shows 2 big paw prints left by the bear, who stood on its hind legs while looking at this contraption from all angles trying to figure out how to make it work. At around 1:00 am, a cinnamon-colored black bear came out from the woods behind our house and checked out the property for a while before coming around to the front deck. There it hopped up quite easily, and gracefully – like a cat, and looked at all the plants on the deck. It must’ve liked the vantage point because it surveyed the hillside for several moments before turning to the grill. Then it was quite interested in exploring. As it stood on its hind legs, it rested one big paw on the lid and turned to the tomato plants with the other paw outstretched, as if taking requests (hot dog or hamburger for you?) – so cute! The bear reluctantly left after several more minutes, what with the barking of Sam and shouts and shots from the house. There hasn’t been a bear sighting in this area for several years (the last one left us with a demolished grill!), so it was nice to know they are still around – at a distance. This was a healthy beautiful animal, which made us happy to have seen this rare treat.
