Vole Ladder
This is a bit hard to see, but the stem of the stunted sunflower rises from the flower box to the tray above which holds seeds. Usually, the bird cafe doesn’t open until the killing frost ensures that the flowers are really done for the season. This year, the birds requested that the cafe open earlier, so I threw a handful of seeds in the tray for them. A vole figured out that it could climb up the stem and have all the seeds it wanted – and it did just that, over and over! To its dismay, the killing frost came two days later and its ready ladder was removed.
