Off the grid fabric

Recently, I participated in a challenge offered by Quilting Arts magazine: to embellish fabric with paint, ink, etc. and use in a small quilt.
This project gave me an opportunity to experiment with color. Using Sharpie pens in shades of purple, I added a dot to the white squares on some gingham scraps. I wanted to see how the colors changed on each background. Not only did the colors shift on both the blue and yellow grids, but the dots were also varied: some were blurry and dreamy, like raindrops on a window, and others had sharp, crisp points, like stars on a cold, clear night. I patched the pieces together with no real plan, but the finished piece reminds me of a solar panel – an indispensable source of energy for those of us who live off the grid.
